CSUN-UCLA Stem Cell Scientist Training Program

Trainee Clinical Fellows Joanna Gell Chris Seet and Bridges Intern Osvaldo Miranda

Each year, the CSUN-UCLA Stem Cell Scientist Training Program provides 10 Cal State Northridge undergraduate students with year-long, full-time paid internships in the laboratories of esteemed faculty from our center and the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Prior to beginning their internships, students accepted into this competitive program receive intensive training in stem cell biology, experimental design and advanced laboratory techniques.

As interns, students complete additional training through complementary coursework at CSUN as well as workshops and seminars covering career development, patient advocacy, ethics and regulatory affairs and science communications.

This program is designed to serve as a springboard for careers in stem cell research in academia and industry.

Eligibility & How to Apply

The program is open to CSUN undergraduate students only. For more information about how to apply, visit the program’s website.

Faculty interested interested in hosting a CSUN intern in their lab as a part of this program should contact Program Director Dr. Cindy Malone at CMalone@csun.edu for information.

Trainee Outcomes

From 2010 to 2023, 139 students have completed internships in the laboratories of more than 40 center faculty. Of these trainees, over 50 have authorship on scientific papers, and all have successfully graduated from CSUN and advanced to careers within the field of biomedicine.

Since 2010, this program has been funded through the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine’s Bridges to Stem Cell Research and Therapy initiative, which aims to train the next generation of stem cell scientists and make California’s regenerative medicine workforce more representative of the state’s population.
