All contributions, large or small, are welcome. We are focused on building a long term community of support and appreciate donations in any amount so long as it is meaningful to you. Your personal commitment to our work is equally as important to your financial commitment.

What do the remaining resources support?

We make every effort to allocate substantial resources to support our faculty and their research efforts. This includes direct research support through our research grant program, offering access to the most advanced technologies and facilities, and ongoing education and training.

What are your administrative expenses?

We focus our resources on research and maintain low administrative overhead. Our structure minimizes duplication of effort by accessing resources from the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and other campus entities. Sharing staff and other administrative resources has enabled us to ensure a low administrative overhead in which no donations are used for administrative expenses. Instead, all gifts support BSCRC research and education, including the purchase of state-of-the-art technology, laboratories, and faculty recruitment.

Why is philanthropy important?

While California institutions benefit from CIRM, that funding will be available for a finite period of time. Though the NIH has relaxed its restrictions on stem cell research its recent funding has steadily decreased among academic universities. In order to sustain and expand our program the BSCRC needs to build a robust fundraising program that supports our outstanding faculty and their cutting edge research.

Can I designate my donation to a specific research area or faculty member?

The BSCRC has many needs and priority areas. If you are interested in supporting the advancement of the stem cell field, the highest impact is through our Stem Cell Research Fund. Under the direction of BSCRC Director Dr. Owen Witte, the Stem Cell Research Fund enables our leadership to identify and fund our priority and high impact areas. If you prefer to support a specific area of research we are happy to help you identify where your valuable gift will have the most impact and can establish a special fund to be designated toward supporting your area of interest.

Assisted Reproductive Technology or ART includes all treatments or procedures that involve the laboratory handling of human eggs and sperm for the purpose of fertilizing an egg and helping a woman become pregnant.

What is differentiation?

Differentiation is the process in which a cell, such as a stem cell, specializes in the creation or replenishing of cells in specific tissues or organs in the body. The process occurs through the activation (“turning on”) or inactivation (“turning off”) of specific genes in the cells. The turning on/turning off process results in the development of cells that are assigned specific tasks such as creating the heart or replenishing the lining of the intestine.

What is an adult or somatic stem cell?

They are stem cells found in the tissue and organs of organisms that have the potential to become their tissue of origin. Essentially, adult or somatic stem cells are tissue specific stem cells that will have a specific occupation within the organism, for example, embryonic stem cells that differentiate or become heart stem cells will form heart tissue. Such cells have the ability to replenish or maintain tissues that have a limited life span, such as skin and intestines.
